HELP I'M ABOUT TO SEE ALL MY DREAM CARS WHAT DO I DO?

A moment of panic in prospect of my first luxury car show.

I have to admit I am one of those rare specimens of the human generally referred to as a 'morning person'. I didn't ask to be one, I am not happy that I am one. I would love to sleep in until the afternoon on any given day and be lazy for the rest of it. Yet, however hard I try, I always seem to wake up to the glaring numbers on my alarm clock reading 6:13am, and at that point my dream of sleep is a lot cause. I like to be productive in the morning as my life is a hectic one, and I tend to get most of my tidying, studying, and practicing done before I head to work or class. Why am I telling you any of this? Because yesterday morning I did none of those productive habits. I sat on my bed staring at a piece of paper for a good 45 minutes. It was a ticket for the Vancouver Luxury & Supercar Weekend.

But Chloe, why are you so excited? It's just a car show.

Yes, you are correct. It is just a car show. But this one is special but it is MY FIRST FREAKING EVER CAR SHOW OF ANY KIND. I know that some of you spend most weekends looking at classic and insane cars, and more of you spend every other weekend doing the same thing. But I am a newbie. And in my case, the 'first time for everything' hasn't happened yet. Let me tell you, I am probably going to be hopping off the walls. The approaching September 9th has been tormenting me since I bought the ticket. But I did not spend an entire morning staring at that piece of paper with just a feeling of joy. It was also a feeling of fear.

Because I have no idea what I'm doing.

I have just thrown myself into the imminent environment of people who know the exact 0-60 times for every car, who know every difference between the 2016 and 2017 Ford GT, and who can carry on a decent conversation about various kinds of engines while sipping a martini and looking as posh as an art collector in a suit jacket. Those are all things that I simply cannot do.

So, my fellow DriveTribers, I need help. If there is anything that comes to mind for tips, tricks, do's and don't's when it comes to car shows (whether or not it seems perfectly logical or obvious) feel free to comment below with it, and I may not come out of this looking like an absolute idiot. And if you have a story about your first time to a car show, share it! I would love to hear what you love/hate about them, and any advice is greatly appreciated.

P.S. I will be sure to post pictures!

  • We will be looking forward to those pictures! I remember my first car show, I was a complete amateur and I was so excited my hands were trembling which rarely happens to me, I made sure my phone was fully charged and that I had a fully charged camera just in case. At a show like that your choice of clothes is probably along the lines of casual but with a hint of formality, great to hear you are going to your car show! Even if you completely disregard everything I just said, remember one thing enjoy the experience, you'll get to see some cars for the first time including ones which are very rare! (P.S there is no 2016 Ford GT)

    • Wonderful, thank you so much for the advice! Oh yes I am clearing storage on my camera specifically for the event :) I am also super nervous for it but I know that once I am there it will be fantastic. Thanks again!

    • That's a step in the right direction, once you been to one or two then you don't feel nervous anymore! You should try and go to cars and coffee type events, they usually happen once a month, they are lots of fun!

  • Here is a pro tip: No one has knows anything. Least of all people at a car show. I wrote about a local show early this year on my blog -- threeinseven.com/2016/11/16/theres-a-car-show-in-town-grab-your-flashlight/ -- read it if so inclined for a small no-no of car shows. Basically, don't pretend. You're learning and marveling, enjoy and embrace that! The details are irrelevant. I do understand the anxiety though. I received my very first press pass and will be attending/covering the RedBull GRC in Seattle this week. I'll be lucky to not be killed...
