Help Needed!

I was driving my E30 earlier today and I pulled up to a stop sign. I took the car out of gear and coasted up to the sign. When it was my turn to go, I couldn't get the car in gear. I sat at the sign for at least a few minutes trying to get the car into 1st gear. I finally stomped on the clutch with all my strength and I managed to engage first gear and be on my way. It feels pretty normal during driving in 2nd-5th gear. But, setting off from a stop in 1st or putting it in reverse requires excessive force. The clutch was fully pressed and I had to continue pressing harder just to get it to grab. To add context, my car has a very light clutch and fully depressing it doesn't take much effort. I haven't driven the car very much but I know it's not supposed to feel like this. Any help would be appreciated.

  • I currently own an E30 M3, and this has happened a few times, one simple piece of advice, try changing through gears whilst sat on your drive, this generally helps prepare the gearbox, helps get the fluid working, and should stop that happening!

  • I would check up on the transmission fluid and it’s possible some gears are wearing out, but I know more about engines than transmissions. Haven’t had enough experience with transmissions just yet

    • Just topped up trans fluid today. I suspect somethings broken. This is the car I learned manual in and it had 2 owners before me so parts are going to wear out…

    • I was also going to film the walk around vid I’ve been planning tomorrow but I don’t really want to drive it now that this happened.

  • Try Checking your shifter fork and transmission fluid.

First check the shifter fork and see If there’s an issue there. If not, check the tranny fluid. If the transmission fluid has metal flakes in it, change the fluid and check it again after some driving. If the flakes come back it may be the 1st gear teeth stripping. But I don’t think it’s likely to be the gear itself 🤷‍♂️

  • Are your clutch master cilinder and slave cilinder OK?

Check for oil leaks, I had a clutch slave cilinder give up on me, couldn’t get it into any gear.

  • Is it a hydraulic clutch?
