Here are 5 facts about BMW that as a car guy you should know!
Do some of these surprise you?
BMW has had a long history of ups and downs, family cars and sports cars, BMW have had the lot and currently the German automaker is producing some controversial models right now such as the M3 and M4 which didn't get off the best of starts because of it's 'interesting' grille and is probably one of the ugliest cars on sale today, the iX which is their new electric SUV which has as much beauty as someone who has had their face smacked with a hammer.
1. Big kidney grilles are not anything new
As I mentioned earlier in the introduction, BMW's newer range of kidney grille vehicles such as the M3 and M4 didn't have a positive outlook on the car community, despite sales being still fairly decent, the car was and still isn't regarded as a good looking, desirable vehicle.
But this may be a shock to some people but BMW have had a history of big grilles in the past with their older models.
Turns out that BMW's weird liking for big grilles was featured on the 7-Series concept back in the late 90s and even as far back as the 1930s on the old 303. A big kidney grille is part of BMW's branding and I personally don't think it will be going away anytime soon.
2. BMW managed to extract 1,500 BHP from a Four Cylinder engine
Putting four cylinder engines in Bimmers now is pretty much unheard of nowadays and being able to extract 1,500 BHP from a 4 Cylinder engine is not something you see everyday either. In 1962, single overhead cam engine produced a sensible (for the time) 72 BHP which was called the M10 and was a familiar engine in Bimmers line up until 1988. But not many people actually know what in 1982, BMW created a turbocharged version called the M12 which was used in a Formula 1 team Brabham's race car driven by Nelson Piquet and as a result of BMW's brilliant engine, Piquet manged to win the championship title in 1987 which was a great achievement. This engine was capable of churning out 1,400 - 1500 BHP therefore becoming one of BMW's most successful competition engines.
Here is Nelson Piquet talking about his Brabham BT52 F1 car powered by BMW
3. Planes and Trains
A lot people may already realise that BMW don't make planes and trains but what they do is they design the interiors for them such as the one in the photo above. They were also responsible for a few engines back in 1945 but haven't made any since but they are still making interiors now and I must say that they are very plush and sumptuous. For instance in 2011, BMW has been involved in the interior design for the BART Train system in San Francisco.
4. James Bond's famous Aston Martin DB5 is powered by an M Sport engine
With James Bond films being well known for their car stunts, they are not going to destroy iconic automotive legends such as the well known Aston Martin DB5. So the film crew assemble replicas to perform the stunts instead with guidance from Aston Martin themselves. These replicas are powered by 300 BHP Straight Six engines. Aston Martin have not revealed where the specific source of the engine is from but all we know is that it is from BMW. But what model? Some people have speculated that the engine sounds similar to the 3.2l E46 M3 S54 Engine which is a real possibility.
5. BMW becoming pranksters?!
Yes you heard me right BMW, on April Fools day, decided to give away a new car as a joke. This was buy a BMW dealership in New Zealand. They had it all carefully set out with adverts with coupons that were available and you could bring your car and the coupon the dealership, ask for someone and then trade your car that the new toy Bimmer. Although it wasn't a nasty joke as it was only a harmless joke to swap your car for a toy Bimmer someone actually did arrive to the dealership with their friend with their Nissan Avenir only expecting a toy car but actually left with a new BMW worth around £50,000.
