In less than two weeks, Volkswagen will reveal the Taos, a new compact SUV that will slot below the Tiguan. So far, Volkswagen North America has only shared one shadowy teaser photo, but these new photos released by the automaker's Brazilian and Argentinian divisions offer a more revealing look at the new compact SUV. While these photos show the South American version, the Taos that will be sold in North America should look practically identical. We now get a much clearer look at the headlights, which are connected with an LED light bar extended across the grille.
The front bumper also features two large intakes and there's also a prominent lower grille. At the back, the Taos sports a faux diffuser and large tailpipes that are probably fake. In terms of dimensions, the Taos is 174.2 inches long, making it 11 inches shorter than the Tiguan.
Overall, the design language doesn't deviate from other current VW models, so we aren't expecting any huge surprises when the colorful camouflage comes off. Under the hood, the US model will be powered by a 1.5-liter version of the Jetta's turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 158 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. With FWD, the engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the AWD version is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.
Thanks to VW's variable turbocharging technology and low-friction APS-coated cylinder liners, the Taos will be more fuel-efficient than the Jetta as well as more powerful. The South American model, on the other hand, will get a 1.4 liter TSI engine with 148 hp, a six-speed automatic transmission, and FWD as standard. A 2.0-liter version with AWD will arrive at a later date.
Based on VW's MQB modular architecture, the Taos will be built in Argentina for the South American region, while the North American version will be produced at VW's plant in Mexico at the company's plant in Puebla. Volkswagen will lift the wraps off the Taos on October 13. In the US, UK sales of the compact SUV will start in the summer of 2021.
