Here's a video of people drag racing mopeds

I guess you can drag race anything?

Drag racing is eternally popular. I can totally see why. You can point pretty much any vehicle down a straight piece of track and mash the pedal to the floor.

I guess this video proves that it is true you can basically drag race anything, because this group of people in Hawaii decided to take their mopeds out for a blast down the drag strip! This tiny event took place at the Hilo Dragstrip just outside of the town of Hilo, not too far from the volcanic peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea.

There don't seem to be many people around at the event (clearly moped drag racing is still quite a niche thing). It's also worth pointing out that the video in question is almost 10 years old by this point. Who knows if this group of crazy Hawaiians are still keeping this up now in 2019?

The most important thing I guess is that we now know that people did try to drag race mopeds and it was probably a lot of fun!

  • Come on Robert! These are not mopeds. As a writer for Drivetribe and even posting in the “Moped & Scooter” section. I would hope you would know the difference. Mopeds have pedals. Scooters which are shown in the video do not.

    • The UK definition no longer includes the pedal aspect. It simply states a moped as being 50cc or under, with a scooter being classed as over 50cc

  • I don't want to ruin your fun but Southeast Asian countries have been doing it for years.

Be it with more than 110cc scooters

  • Just put some RC grade fuel in the tank, which contains nitro. Guaranteed win (and a broken engine down the road).

  • On a moped, you are incapable of 'drag racing'... unless you're a bloke in a dress.
