Here's how Jerry Seinfeld bought Steve McQueen's Porsche 917 on a used car lot

The story of how Jerry Seinfeld found Steve McQueen's Porsche 917 from the movie 'Le Mans'

Jerry Seinfeld has one of the greatest Porsche collections of all time and is well known for being an evidentiary car fanatic. However, the crown jewel of his collection is a Porsche 917, chassis 022, but it's not just any old 917, it's the one driven by Steve McQueen in the movie 'LeMans'.

Jerry was recently on Spike Feresten's podcast 'Spike's Car Radio' to tell the story of how he eneded up buying the car off of a used car lot in 2002.

The car has had quite a colorful history, starting with Reinhold Joest, who took it racing in Europe after the movie was filmed. It then sold to Richard Attwood, winner of the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 1975. He was the one who repainted the car into its iconic Gulf Racing color scheme and then proceeded to sell it in 2000 for a cool $1.2 million.

Enter Spike Feresten, he saw the car on a used car lot in 2002 and asked Jerry to come by and check it out with him.

The dealer offered the two a day with the car on Willow Springs raceway, hilariously one of the front wheels fell off while it was on the move. However, despite the wonky wheel Jerry took the bait and bought the iconic 917.

  • I'd rather use the less clickbaity term 'used car dealer' or 'classics dealer'.

Love how the title makes the readers think that Seinfeld bought a genuine 917 from a local used car lot.
