Here's How Not To Drive At The Track

Car crashes. Why can't we ever just look away? I don't know the answer to that, but I do know bad driving when I see it, being no stranger to it myself.

This guy, the owner of a 370Z, shows us his trackday finesse (or lack thereof) at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in the desert of California. What ensues afterward is nothing short of astounding--lack of solid steering wheel grip, multiple unnecessary shifts, liberal definition of a racing line, a loose definition of control of either end of the car... you get the idea. I'm sure you can point out a few more.

Oh, and surprise. He crashes on the cooldown lap. Jump to 21:50 for the action.

Thankfully, the owner of the car came out unscathed, and the car was relatively unharmed, too. Damage to one wheel and tire and the washer fluid reservoir.

Just, please, consider lessons before you get on the track. Your car will appreciate it.

  • I'm not sure what event this is, but it's clear this driver hasn't had instruction and he's on track with no communication or feedback on his driving. An instructor in the right seat would have gotten him to focus on keeping his hands on the wheel and simplify what was going on for him to learn 1 by 1 starting with line and braking. This is a dangerous situation being thrown out on his own with no experience. I'm concerned there may not have been much classroom before this either as there are some commonly covered basics that he's glossing over here as well. These are usually demonstrated and translated in car after a classroom which he doesn't have. All this to say; I don't blame him and I wish he had more opportunities for instruction before sliding off the track. He may be turned away entirely from the sport at this point which is unfortunate.

  • Need to start off a little easier. My little L28E with 130 hp on 14" tires was the perfect starter. Taught me alot on driving lines. As well as "feel" Extremely loose in the ass. Very little understeer. I called it playful. She was a team player. I didn't hurt her she did not hurt me. The 370 with all it's gadgets will tell you, your a track day god right until that happens lol.
