Here's how Rolls Royce's disappearing Spirit of Ecstasy actually works

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes?

For years, Rolls Royce have had a magical badge on the front of their cars known as the Spirit of Ecstasy. And I say it's magical because at the push of a button it disappears underneath the hood, but how does it work?

Well, it's really simple. All that happens is the badge drops down, tips to the side and then is replaced by a flat surface which fills the hole the statue was in.

That's it, but it's amazing to think just how much longer the car need to be in order to accomodate the mechanism just to allow the Spirit of Ecstasy to disappear. It's the little details which is why we appreciate companies like Rolls Royce.

  • This isn’t something I ever cared to think about. I know it’s motor driven but then so is a wiper and I don’t care about that too.

  • How It's Made did a segment on making hood ornaments:

There's a surprising amount of work that goes into making "The Spirit of Ecstasy".

  • Hmm, doesn't look as complex as I imaged from the outside.
