Here's Why You Should Never Race A V6 RAV4

The V6 Rav4 has no business being this quick.

I'm against the SUV craze as much as the next wagon enthusiasts but, I also love sleepers. This is why the V6 RAV4 sends me through a moral struggle. Here's the very epitome of the SUVs that are killing our cars but also a sleeper capable of 13 second quarter miles.

If you race a V6 RAV4 you might actually lose. In stock form, the V6 RAV4 can sprint from 0-60 in just over 6 seconds thanks to its 269 horsepower 3.5-liter V-6. Even if you beat the RAV4 you just raced a RAV4 and that's pretty foolish.

The RAV4 is your standard mid-sized SUV that sells in spades and clogs our highways. In the base trim, the RAV4 uses the 2.4liter inline-4 cylinder engine from base Camry. This dreary engine is what the RAV4 is known for but there is another engine option that transforms the humble RAV4. When the RAV4 is fitted with the 3.5-liter V6 it becomes a legitimate sleeper.

Then there's the performance that accompanies that badge. The V6 RAV4 was never intended to be a performance SUV. Toyota wander targeting the Macan when they built it. Instead, it's just an RAV4 with better acceleration.

There's even a modding community. From my Youtube searches, it seems to be about 3 people but it's still very impressive.

A sleeper is a car that nobody expects to be fast. It prides itself of showing none of the go, picture the opposite of a Civic Type R. The RAV4 is an SUV a V6 badge and that's it, no silly wings or massive vents.

  • They don't sound bad either, that v6 should get thrown into a brz and be an original swap for once.

    • That’s amazing! I’m not really a fan of suvs but the ability to mod these into interesting performance cars is changing my mind. How long have you had yours? Are the coils specific to the rav4?

  • RAV4 2011 V6 owner. I’ve beat some actual sports cars but I’ve stopped racing since the tranny went out for the second time. Making it an off roader. Any tips?

    • North woods Performance makes an amazing lift kit and undercarriage protection for these. I’m turning mine into an overlanding rig. I will be placing a order for the kit soon, and have only seen great reviews for it. My first V6 got totaled...

  • The funny thing is, I would probably never in a million years consider purchasing such a vehicle. But this admittedly has me interested. Also of interest is the fact that Toyota has killed the V6 in the Rav4. You KNOW a vehicle HAS to be good when it is so good that the manufacturer feels compelled to kill it!

  • The RAV4 is a great bang for the buck. But it can't hold a candle to a Porche Ceyenne Turbo, which costs much more.
