Come one! Come all! Come get your used car from the house of ill repute!

Buying a used rental car is a tricky gamble. If you're like me, every single rental I've ever driven is worse for wear after it's been in my possession. I'm not even talking about the things that happen to it that I CAN control. Ever hit a duck on the freeway in a rental Versa? It's quack-tacular.

Where the hell could you rent a M4?! Apparently in Florida and Arizona. I'd have guess Las Vegas and nowhere else. Image via Hertz screenshot.

Everyone's favorite Mustang and Corvette renter is in dire straights. As reported by Jalopnik and Carscoops, Hertz "shall dispose of at least 182,521 lease vehicles between June 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020" due to bankruptcy. If being one of the larger used car sales lots in the middle of a pandemic couldn't be the worst part, they're also on the hook for $650 million owed to lenders.

The low mileage stuff is more my speed (literally)... some people can do a lot of damage in one thousand miles though. Image via Hertz screenshot.

Selling over 180-thousand cars in less than six months time sounds like quite the ordeal. I hadn't even thought about how many cars Hertz owns, but apparently they own around a half million cars in their fleet.

This could be a great time to boost your own fleet if our current global situation isn't already putting you out of business. Maybe it's time for a questionable history daily driver to enter your life? I've always been a bit leery about owning a rental car, especially since our own Three Amigos - in a previous employment - detailed how they're quite possibly the fastest cars in the world.

There looks to be some 'good deals' if used rentals is your sort of risk-taking activity. There are a couple C7 Z06 Corvettes for sale, around one hundred cars under $10,000, but it's far more fun to see what is the most expensive used cars they have for sale. Anyone car for a used 2020 BMW M4 with a gentle 4,000 miles on the odometer?

  • The old adage “not all auction cars are bad, but all bad cars go to the auction” comes to mind.

  • Do not buy a rental car. My dad took one offroading in Montana once. That Corolla was practically rock crawling!

  • Once upon a time, I used to work for one of the well known rental agencies, and after a pre-determined mileage, they would sell their vehicles. Obviously, Hertz is reducing the fleet before that mileage guideline, but the issue with purchasing used vehicles from a rental agency is the same. Irrespective of the mileage on the clock, the safe assumption is that the miles on that car are some of the hardest driven in that car's life. As the old Top Gear episode pointed out, the fastest car in the world is a rental with the insurance waiver. Even as an employee, we'd beat those cars to death, moving them from airport to lot to parking garage. We all drove like we stole it, pushed engines well past redline, and had no concerns regarding the longevity of the car. From my own experience, I tend to steer far away from rental agency car sales.......they're headaches waiting to happen. Just my $0.02

    • This is the most valuable .02 some people will ever receive about buying cars.

    • I'm currently on holiday driving a Fiat Panda... I can't even get close to the red line on that thing! And believe me!! I'm trying!

BUT... The saying works pretty well also with "The best off-road car in the world is a rental car"

  • Every hire car I’ve ever had in the US has been knackered and would not meet my standards for a car I’d own even though some of them had less than 10k miles.

If the car however had less than 1k miles and the price was right I might consider...... if the price was right!

Dropping this many cars into the market during a pandemic is just hertz trying to convert assets to cash to save the company. In this case there will be bargains to be had, just make sure you get a good one and not the regular shit that’s been through the mill.

    • I had a Jeep Compass with 14k miles on it that felt like it was shedding parts. Your experience is shared with many. Some of their cars will be hard to give away.

    • Hire car companies in general buy mundane cars and manufacturers offer huge discounts and in some cases 50% off list because they buy in the hundreds or thousands. Mundane cars are not cared for, a-b machines.

There will be people on the...

  • The vast majority of rentals are some of the best used vehicles you can buy. These companies are required to maintain strict maintenance guidelines or they lose their good standing with manufacturers along with preferred pricing and special allocations of flagship models. Think Z06 and SS Camaro.. Think about it. Rental companies are, nearly, free advertising for manufacturers. They don't want people thinking their vehicles are crap because of poor standards. It's just like shopping for any other used vehicle. There is always risk, but rental companies have maintenance logs and histories to back up the condition.

    • I wish I could look at them with the same rose colored glasses. I don’t disagree that some people have excellent experiences with prior rentals. I do believe a rental is more risky than private party. It’s easier to gauge the private party...
