There are a few things which come to mind when you hear the word ‘hippies’ - 60s, certain types of music, certain types of mushrooms… But truly iconic, in my car-focused mind, is Volkswagen Type 2 (yes, it has some other names - Transporter, the Bus, Camper).
During my recent trip to Thailand, I spotted this sad green (and slammed) VW in a relatively deserted area with nothing but old torn tents around. Having absolutely no ornaments of any kind, it didn’t really look like a camper either.
Built somewhere between 1967-1979, it looked lonely under a black canvas fabric. Image source: own work
But when the sun went down, this abandoned vehicle was turned into something else - bright neon lights in the windows, and a disco ball on its roof. The side of the van was completely opened and transformed into a bar with chairs right next to it. The music was loud, and the lights were bright. Yes, it’s an ordinary Volkswagen by day, and a bar by night.
As it turns out, this kind of modification is quite popular in Thailand. So if you find a lonely VW while you’re there, make sure to pop in after the sunset and see it transformed into a real party vehicle.
