Porsche’s Cayman GT4 is a track beast. Many have likened it to be the best real-world-daily-driven version of the mighty 911 GT3 RS.⠀
In South Africa, the 718 Cayman line-up consists of four derivatives – the 220kw Cayman, the 257kw Cayman S, the 294kw Cayman GTS 4.0, and the 309kw Cayman GT4.⠀
But while the Cayman GTS 4.0 might not be as track-focused as his race-ready brethren, it has proved to be equally rapid at dispatching the competition. In a recent track test conducted by Germany’s Sport Auto magazine, the GTS 4.0 was unleashed on the famed Hockenheim F1 track, and the results were quite shocking.⠀
The compact sports car – at the hands of Uwe Senner – managed a best lap time of 1:56.90. Comparatively speaking, the significantly more powerful Cayman GT4 lapped the track in 1:55 at the hands of the same driver – a mere 1.9 seconds quicker. ⠀
But to really put the GTS’ track effort into perspective, one needs to look at how it compared relative to other more powerful machinery. The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 matched the lap time set by the 991 Carrera GTS, bested the BMW M2 Competition’s effort of 1:57.6, and thumped the Toyota Supra’s time of 1:58.8.⠀
The 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 is powered by a 4.0-litre naturally aspirated flat-six that develops 294kw and 420nm of torque. Porsche claims the rear-wheel-driven GTS 4.0 will do 0-100kph in 4.5 seconds, and max out at 293kph. Like the GT4, it is available with a choice of only a 6-speed manual transmission.â €
Porsche South Africa has priced the 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 R1 379 000, whilst the Cayman GT4 is priced at R1 719 000. Comparatively, the entry-level ownership in the 992 starts with the 283kw Carrera Coupe at R1 699 000.
