Honda Civic Type R Limited sets new Suzuka record
The hot hatch stormed to a new FWD track record at the circuit
Renault and Honda have, for several years, been competing for the top spot in lap records. In 2017, the Type R became the fastest front-drive car around the Nürburgring. Early 2019, Renault took the crown with their Megane RS Trophy-R. Fueling the fire further, Renault took the Trophy-R to Honda's home track, Suzuka, and set the FWD record there later that year.
Now Honda, which has created an even faster Type R, the Limited Edition, has gotten on the track at Suzuka to set the record straight. It did so dramatically, being over a second-and-a-half faster than the Renault. No modifications were made to the car, built to production specifications.
That time is fast enough to beat some supercars, including the Ferrari F40 tested at the same track. Civic Type R Project Leader Hideki Kakinuma said, "the engineering team and I embraced a racing spirit that has been passed down for generations, and it's this strong passion that's driving the evolution of the Civic Type R towards becoming the ideal sports car."
Living up to its Limited moniker, only 600 will be available when it launches in the US later this year, but it's now the best option for a world-beating hot hatch.
