HONDA CIVIC TYPE R UNLEASHED
The first turbo type r, what is the world coming to...
If ever there was a car that divided opinion it has surely got to be the Honda Civic Type R, the styling is a homage to teenage lads across the country drawing their idea of a perfect car and the rear wing is to some a bolt-on to far. But get a little closer, its ok the Type R doesn't bite, yet, and you will see that this is the best hot hatch I've driven for a long time.
Love it or hate it the Type R is a superbly engineered 'Hot Hatch'
Holding the record at the Nürburgring for the fastest hot hatch, it was only just beaten recently by the VW Golf Clubsport S, but hang on a minute, the Clubsport S can only carry two passengers and has a track focused build so of course it will be quicker. The Honda Civic Type R is still underneath its showboat exterior a 5-door hatchback capable of ferrying kids, luggage and normal day to day lifestyles.
Sporty rear diffuser and quad tailpipes.
People familiar with the high-revving naturally aspirated Type R's of old may feel disappointed with the new turbo era but times change and now everyone is seeing the advantages of turbo's, even Porsche. The 2.0-litre petrol turbo is capable of a top speed of 167mph, 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and generates 306 bhp. Certainly enough power for a fun school run in the morning. And I couldn't think of a better car to give your kids some popularity at school!
Plenty of stopping power is needed with the Type R.
The engine is still 'poppy' and 'raspy' which makes driving off the lights huge fun, whilst the six-speed gearbox is short and sharp, exactly what a hot hatch should have. There is a limited slip differential which gives an abundance of grip and the suspension set up allows confidence to grow with each mile driven. The Honda Civic Type R is a car capable of so much yet covers every base for a small family.
Type R interior is ergonomically very good.
The interior carries on the sporty theme and two bucket seats adorn the front cabin, these are both purposeful and comfortable. The cabin wraps around the you and it feels like every detail has been thought through on how to give the driver the best experience. Alloy touches such as the gear knob and pedals break up the plentiful red and black.
