Honda MotoGP champ takes on snow-covered Austrian peak
Remember when Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took his F1 car for a spin on the white-glazed Hahnenkamm Mountain in Austria? Twelve months on Honda’s two-wheel champ, MotoGP title winner Marc Marquez, decided to have a go on the same stretch ahead of this year's pro ski race.
Apparently the bike was not fitted with machine guns or chasing a secret agent to a twangy sinister disco soundtrack at the time. But it did feature modified snow spikes, and Marquez sensibly took some tips from Austrian ice speedway hero, Franky Zorn.
‘It was really difficult to keep the bike under control,’ said Marquez, who wobbled a bit like a 16-year old on Fireblade in certain sections. ‘But I’m young and it’s good to try some crazy things.’
No word on the speeds the Spaniard reached on the mountain, but since pro skiers hit almost 70mph on an 85 percent grade a bit further down the slope from where Marquez was riding his circa-250bhp MotoGP bike, you can bet he wasn’t hanging about.
