Honda/Acura Recall Over 1 Million Cars
Today, the manufacturers recall over 1 million cars due to faulty airbags.
If you haven't heard the news, Honda and Acura have now recalled approximately 1.1 million of their cars due to faulty Takata airbags once again. From the Los Angeles Times, "Honda Motor Co. will recall more than 1 million vehicles in the United States to replace a batch of faulty air bag parts that were installed as part of the largest auto safety recall in history."
Apparently, the problem with the airbags by Takata, is the inflator. This part that has been deemed defective as part of that big recall back in 2015. The Los Angeles Times reported that, "The inflator that failed was a replacement installed in 2015 under the terms of a prior recall. The vehicle was included in one of Honda’s earliest campaigns to replace Takata air bag inflators that contained a propellant that can become unstable and explode in a crash — a defect spanning many automakers that is linked to more than a dozen deaths and at least 220 injuries worldwide...The Maryland incident is the first reported injury linked to a Takata air bag made with a desiccant, a chemical additive that absorbs moisture to prevent the ammonium nitrate propellant from becoming unstable."
As of right now, Honda/Acura are the only manufacturers that are troubled with this problem. This is a problem for me because my fiancee just had her airbags fixed in her 2001 Accord back in 2015. This may explain, maybe, I am not saying otherwise, why when we were in an accident not too long ago in that car, the airbags never deployed. But this is worrying for me since this is her daily. Hopefully this problem will be resolved soon. Until then, please drive safely.

What a mess. The irony here is that airbags are a safety device.
Not to be dramatic here, but maybe it's time for a rethink on how airbags are inflated. I was never comfortable with the concept of an explosive device, actually a number of small explosive devices, in close proximity to my body - in order to save me. That always seemed "a bit off".
Maybe compressed air. Here's an idea: store the compressed air in the rocker panels. They could act as pontoons in case you accidentally drove into deep water. (Yes, I'm being ridiculous, but you never know.)
True. And even back in the day there was risk of asbestos in airbags.
Ouch!
I know.
Very annoying that all of our Hondas have had to go in repeatedly for this issue!
Indeed.
Why can't people simply learn to drive at a sensible speed with due care and attention ?
I know.
