Horizon Chase Turbo wants to remind you of classic 80s and 90s racers

Take it back with retro-themed racer, Horizon Chase Turbo, coming to PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One in 2018.

If you are old enough to remember playing the likes of Out Run, Super Hang-on, Top Gear, Lotus Turbo Challenge and other classic racers from the 80s and 90s, Horizon Chase Turbo is probably going to be right up your street.

The indie game, developed by Aquiris, borrows inspiration from all those mighty games that ate up your childhood, down to the 2D visuals that tried to trick you into thinking they were 3D (bliss).

From here, though, things get modern. Well, except the ludicrously bright cartoony visuals. For starters, the 26-car collection includes recent machinery such as what appears to be a Koenigsegg and even a Tesla Model S.

There will also be 10 upgrade possibilities for each car, which can be applied using a modern user-interface, 48 cities to race through, 12 cups to complete, various weather effects and a whopping 110 tracks to master. So you should find it easy to misspend your adult life, too.

Ah, the hippymobile

In a shameless but forgivable attempt to take you further down nostalgia street, you can challenge up to four friends to a spot of split-screen multiplayer, drunken or otherwise.

If the Horizon Chase Turbo looks familiar, you may have played its Android and iOS successor, Horizon Chase, which was well-received by critics when it launched in 2015.

Bright enough visuals for you?

Anything else of note? Only that Barry Leitch is doing the soundtrack, the veteran game composer who made the music for all of these games, including Top Gear on the SNES. And that there will be an Online Competitive Ghost Mode for racing people outside of your lounge.

Horizon Chase Turbo is arriving on PC (via Steam) and PS4 on the 15th of May, 2018. The Nintendo Switch and Xbox One version will follow later in the year, but no word of an exact date.
