Hot Sixty 4th: Safari's Dynamic Duo

A look back at 2 previously released Datsun rally cars (Hotsixty4th datsun510 Datsunfairlady TLV Greenlight)

Welcome to Hot Sixty 4th where I showcase DLM 1/64 and smaller and sometimes slightly larger. These 2 castings are based on a race that took place in East Africa during the 70s. So for my 101st post In Drivetribe and 347th total post I bring you the Datsun bluebird 1600SSS from TLV Nostalgic Hero Vol.1 and the 1971 Datsun Fairlady 240 Z from Greenlight.

Released in March 2018, the TLV Datsun bluebird was a collaboration between Tomica and the magazine 'Nostalgic Hero'. The 1600SSS won the 18th East-African Safari Rally in all the categories of Overall/Class/Team in 1970.

While I am not sure when this was released by Greenlight, I found this around January or February of 2019. This car is the overall winner of the 19th East-African Safari Rally in 1971, and brought Nissan’s second win in a row, following the victory in the previous year by the Datsun Bluebird.

The Tomica comes in a commemorative box that included the regular size box for the casting to celebrate both the 30th anniversary of the Nostalgic Hero magazine in July, 2018 as well as the 15th anniversary of Tomica Limited Vintage in 2019.

Here are the 2 actual cars.

Comparing between the replicas and real cars here is my take on it. The TLV Bluebird has a nice overall proportion and detail but is missing the Shell sponsor logo on the passenger door. It does come with extra light that has to be install on the fender. The Greenlight Fairlady does not have a good proportion compared to the real car. The chrome window trim is too thick for the scale and even the wheels does not match but has gotten almost all of the sponsors logo on the casting.

  • Cool to see that 240Z, Tomica had effectively the same livery back in the day, this is apparently a fairly rare model:

    • Cool. Not an exact replica of the real one but a nice one to have. Kyosho I be.I even also released one but was not aware about it till later. It probably is closer to the real

    • As this one is a 45+ year old toy, it's exact enough for me :) I never knew about these rally cars until I found this model.
