This bizarre year saw the launch of the Volkswagen ID.3. Wolfsburg's first EV, based on their new MEB platform. With up to 204hp and 550km of range, it started gaining market share almost immediately. Also this year, the ID.4 was revealed to the public, as an all-electric alternative to the Tiguan.

Well, 4 comes after 3, so that makes sense, right? Not so fast. Every car manufacturer that uses numbers for their models, differentiates their SUVs from their cars. Audi with the Q line-up and BMW with the X series. VW using ID for both cars and SUVs makes the naming scheme hard to follow. Will the ID.5 be a Touareg-sized SUV, or an electric Passat? As it turns out, neither.

Reportedly the ID.5 is what VW will call the ID.4 coupe. By doing this, they strayed from their tradition of keeping different body-styles under one name. This still leaves the question of what they will call the Passat replacement, but according to multiple articles it will be called the ID.6 and will be released in 2023.

Whether this name includes both the sedan and estate versions is not yet known, but I really fail to understand this new naming scheme. Are they just naming cars in order they come out and we will get a Polo sized ID.8? Probably not, but Volkswagen, who plan to release 27 electric cars by 2022, is complicating the naming structure after just two.
