How is the smart fortwo the only EV convertible?
I'm genuinely confused why no other auto manufacturer makes a convertible EV
Even as a fan of EVs and of smart cars, I will have to concede that smart made perhaps the worst modern EV. The first gen Electric Drive debuted in 2013 with 68 miles of range, and with the next generation range actually dropped to 58 miles. Even worse, it had no fast charging capability. And yet, these cars have one redeeming feature: being an EV convertible.
Technically speaking, Tesla made a roadster convertible, but they are quite rare and expensive, so the only attainable one seems to be the smart car. I am baffled why no auto manufacturers are making EV convertibles. Currently in the US no major auto maker is producing an EV convertible. Furthermore, no company has even announced plans for one. Mazda seems to be the best bet, teasing an electrified Miata, but that's not even a concept car yet.
It's very confusing to me why no one thought to make a small, zippy EV roadster or convertible. Instant torque at the wheels and a low center of gravity would seemingly make EVs a perfect fit for a small sports car, but no automaker has made on (aside from a couple Teslas). So I'm asking all automakers: Please make an EV convertible. The world will be a better place.
A quick note before I go: this will probably be the last article I post on DriveTribe (unless I manage to pull together one of my drafts before it shuts down) and I am so glad I was able to have an opportunity to share my ideas with people on this website, and I am sad to see it go. This website has a unique and vibrant community, and it will be a great loss to all of the motoring world when it finally dies.
