As California is currently being hit by one of the most terrifying natural disasters and the news full of Armageddon-like images, it is hard to find nice stories from the area. However, there are many people defying the odds to help others like real life super heroes. One example that has popped up recently is a man called Allyn Pierce. He is a local nurse and head of ICU at the hospital of a town called Paradise that has been severely hit by the wildfires.

On Thursday morning, he helped organise the mass evacuation of the hospital helping many ill people get to safety. This isn’t however the most heroic thing he did that day. After waiting and making sure that everyone else got out, he finally followed the rest of the evacuating residents to safety. His evacuation just like that of many others didn’t go to plan as he got stuck in a traffic jam and couldn’t move. With the flames spreading closer and closer to his Toyota Tundra melting parts of the body work, he prepared for the worst by making a special voice message saying, “Just in case this doesn’t work out, I want you to know I really tried to make it out." for his close friends and family and playing “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. However, a bulldozer suddenly managed to move a vehicle next to him freeing the way. The selfless Allyn Pierce still had a few heroic moves up his sleeve. Instead of driving to safety, he decided to go back to his home town where he found many injured residents and had to help them along with some of his colleagues at the hospital. After the danger had passed, he told reporters, “We're terrible at burning to death, but we're amazing at taking care of people.”. They created a temporary surgery in the car park of the burning hospital. Soon though, the flames became too hot and dangerous to bare and they had to relocate to the hospital helipad. In an effort to block the fire from spreading nearer to their position, they managed to surround the helipad with rocks and stones.

The team of nurses, police officers and firefighters set up shop on the Hospital helipad to help injured civilians.

After the saving everyone and getting back to safety, Allyn still stays humble. “This is what we do,” he said. “Any nurse, any healthcare worker, any cop, they were there and they all did their jobs.” As the story has circled the world, Toyota has found a post on Instagram mentioning his amazing efforts and offered to give him a new truck to replace the one that got destroyed in the flames. This is just a minor part of his life that has been taken away. As the wildfire burnt it’s way through Paradise, his home and workplace have both been destroyed and will need to rebuild his life almost from scratch.
