How to add pictures of your favorite cars to your home screen using iOS 14
It's easier than you might think.
Now, before anyone complains in the comments, let me clear something up. I am aware that iOS 14 has been out for months now, and that I am late writing this article. Now that that's been taken care of, let's begin. One of the biggest features of iOS 14 is the addition of home screen widgets. A widget, in basic terms, is a box that can display a variety of information such as the weather or your phone's battery level. When I first found out about them, I thought that they were useless. Opening the weather app isn't exactly difficult or time-consuming, so I didn't bother messing around with this new feature. It wasn't until a week after I had installed iOS 14 that I realized the potential of a feature like this. After some digging around, I figured out that with the help of an app, I could add pictures of my favorite cars to my home screen.
Here's an example of what your home screen could look like:
If you don't know how to do this, here are a few simple steps to get you started:
Step 1: Install Widgetsmith (other apps are available)
The first thing you'll want to do is install a free app called "Widgetsmith" (this is not a sponsored post). Other apps can be used, but Widgetsmith has worked well for me. While there are paid features in this app, none of them are necessary. Widgetsmith can be installed by clicking here if you are using the DriveTribe app.
Step 2: Create a Widget Using Widgetsmith (again, other apps are available.)
Once you have installed the app, find an image of your favorite car on the internet. Once you have added the picture to your camera roll, open the Widgetsmith app. When the app has loaded, you will be presented with the choice of creating a small, medium, or large widget. For this example, I will be making a small widget. I have included an image at the end of this step that shows how to make it if you need additional help. Select the option "add small widget" and tap on the newly created widget. A menu will open that gives you an option between creating a default widget or a timed widget. I have no clue what a timed widget is, so I recommend you select "default widget." Once you do this, you are able to choose between many types of widgets. Scroll down the list until you see the option titled "photo." To add your image, tap on the "selected photo" setting at the bottom of the menu. Once you have uploaded your photo and are happy with the alignment, leave the menu and select "save" in the top right corner. You can now exit the app.
Step 3: Add the Widget to your Home Screen
Now that you have created your widget, you can add it to your home screen. Go to the page you would like to add it to and hold down anywhere on the screen until all of your apps start to wobble. At the top right of your screen, you will see a plus symbol. When you select this, a menu will open with all of the widgets you are able to add. Scroll down and select the Widgetsmith app. After this, you will be prompted to choose between adding a small, medium, or large widget. Select the size of the widget that you created earlier. The newest widget should be added to your home screen. If the wrong image shows up, you can just hold down on it and select "edit widget." You can then select the correct widget.
Bonus Step: Stacking Photos
Now, you might ask, "What if I can't decide which photo to add to my home screen?" There are two ways to solve this problem. The easy way is to just add two separate widgets. The more exciting way is to stack widgets. If you have multiple widgets created, you are able to combine them and switch between them whenever you want. To do this, simply add two widgets to your home screen and drag one on top of the other. This allows you to have a slideshow containing all of your favorite cars. If you need additional help with this, you can watch the video I have created below.
