  • Technically speaking, the first M3 to use a V8 was not the E9x M3. The E46 M3 GTR race and road versions both used the P60B40 prototype flat plant crank V8's developed to crush Porsche. The E9x M3 has the S65B40 V8, which is loosely based off this legendary P60B40 V8 engine, while the race version of this car got to enjoy the P65B40 V8, which was more like the original P60B40 used in the E46 GTR, as it had a flat plane crank as well and similar displacement.
