Hyundai's luxury brand Genesis is working on new SUVs
Genesis, the luxury division of the Hyundai Group, was officially announced as a standalone marque in 2015 and since then, the Korean brand has mainly produced big, luxurious sedans like the G90 you see in the picture. Now Genesis is planning a raft of new vehicles, including crossover and SUVs, for their line-up.
I personally like Genesis. I think some of their cars look tremendous, which is why I'm pretty confident they're going to step their game up when it comes to building SUVs. Genesis is, after all, mainly active in the North American market where SUVs play a crucial role.
Genesis boss Manfred Fitzgerald recently said that the brand is working on bringing SUVs to the market, along with other vehicles. One of them is going be based on the Essentia coupe concept, and another will be based on the Mint city-car concept. Fitzgerald still maintains that the production of a new SUV is going to be prioritized.
The Korean carmaker might start with a mid-size SUV called the GV80, designed specifically for the US market, which is set to be unveiled in the first quarter of 2020, followed by a compact SUV called the GV70 in 2021.
Fitzgerald hasn't mentioned any details about engine options but Genesis has been using a 3.8 L V6 as a "go-to" engine, and also a 3.3 L twin-turbo V6, so these two might be a good starting point. He then added that we are going to be "surprised with what we show".
