If you have visited NZ you might be familiar with our system for campers (apart from private campgrounds), there are campsites with toilets and showers that cost a small fee to cover maintenance of the facility and there are campsites that do not have these amenities but are free, and you can only stay at these if you vehicle is self contained (meaning it has a toilet and shower and can hold waste and grey water for up to 3 days without being emptied). This works very well, if you have a motorhome you can park up in most places and enjoy a good night's sleep in picturesque New Zealand, and if you are traveling with a tent you simply find a campsite and pay a small fee before pitching your tent, listening to the bird song
Camping in NZ is an awesome experience.
Or at least it works well for the people who respect it, this morning, as I got back into my car after picking up some milk and bread from the store I noticed a pair of young french travelers getting out of a minivan that was most certainly not fitted with a toilet, let alone shower and grey water tank .......... with a self contained sticker on the back. And after a quick google search I learned that this is becoming a major problem, tourists are jumping of the plane, buying any cheap little car or van and sticking fake self contained stickers on the back, avoiding the small fee but also traveling around the country using the side of the road as their toilet.
This one was spotted in Dunedin.
So you think: "That's disgusting, why is the government letting this happen?" and that's the problem, the government isn't doing anything to stop this problem because their too scared to bite the hand that feeds them; they don't want to upset the valuable tourism industry. Releasing that the government does not want to take action, I decided to do it myself - I grabbed a permanent marker and drew a neat little pile of feces on the sticker.......... So if your a kiwi reading this, and you happen to see a self contained sticker on a car that just isn't self contained, you know what to do!
