I finally get behind the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 R
The thing with racing cars is that you can’t just pussyfoot around in them. You need to drive them flat-out straight away to keep the tyres up to temperature. Go too slowly and they’ll cool down, massively increasing the chance of a sudden and bowel-troubling loss of grip.
But chances are if you’re not an experienced racing driver you won’t have the confidence to go fast straight away.
Especially when you’ve struggled into the car through a tiny gap in a rollcage and stalled the thing in front of an entire race team that’s just trusted you with their pride and joy.
Needless to say I’d never do anything like that, and my first drive as a tyre tester in a racing 911 went without a hitch. Okay, maybe there was one tiny moment of drama.
