- Ignore the little die cast model because my car was actually gunmetal grey.

In 2012, I bought a second-hand Mazda RX-8 in gunmetal grey and, seventeen months and 30,000+ miles later, I sold it. I was a bit sad but also relieved because the experience taught me that the RX-8 is just every bit as amazing as it is terrible. It's fast, comfortable, it revs up to 9,500 rpm and I think it looks good, too. On the other hand, it is insanely thirsty and fantastically unreliable. One of the things that amuses me, and there are many, about the Wankel engine in the RX-8 is the fact that there are two rotors but, for some reason, four spark plugs. And that's not the end of it because then there are two different sets of spark plugs. And here they are. My RX8 was the 231-hp model and I miss it. One day, I'm gonna share some pictures.

  • Ok, I was checking out the second-hand RX-8s up for sale right yesterday - you're making me change my mind... They aren't even that cheap yet, but now I know it's because of the redundant spark plugs 😜

  • I had an RX8 for 6 years, mine was very reliable, other than rear tail lights fogging up everything worked perfectly and I loved it to bits!! I miss it a lot 😔

  • I like that you found parts from an old car in your stuff. I have pieces from almost every car or motorcycle I've owned in the last 20 years scattered around my garage and storage unit. I'm not keeping them on purpose but it does make me smile and I find something.

    • When I was a young'un me and my friends used to tune scooters to make them go faster. We'd replace the 50 cc engine with a 70 cc engine, new exhaust system, new clutch, new belt, new air filter. The whole 9 yards. I've had at least three engine...

    • I have a lot of stuff still to go through from moving. You can't even see my motorcycle or my riding mower in that mess can you? There is also a storage bin the size of a one-car garage that's full head high! It'll take me all summer to unscrew this

  • So so many times I’ve considered buying one just for fun... I had no idea these were so unreliable. I know The Wankel has its issues.. thought the 13b was more reliable. Cross that one off the list.

    • impossibly unreliable. Maybe I was just unlucky (but I don't think I was)

    • Well I have the worst luck so it’ll be me too. I had a neighbor growing up who loved the Mazda rotary. He had a truck, at least 1coupe and at least one motor torn apart in his garage. These cars were early 70’s and not that old. I learned a lot and was...
