Icon 4x4 revived this 1950s Chevy Silverado and it looks amazing
The Thriftmaster Old School Edition is definitely one of the best restomods you can get!
You may already be familiar with Icon 4x4. It's one of the biggest names in restomodding, creating amazing retro-meets-modern creations out of classic American, British and Japanese cars and trucks. Starting off as a Toyota Land Cruiser specialist, Jonathan Ward has grown his business into an empire of creating improved and updated classics and modern classics. He even has a celebrity fan in the form of Joe Rogan, who owns at least two Icon trucks and has even had Jonathan Ward on his podcast twice!
One of its most well-known regular 'production' (if you can call it a production car!) models is the Thriftmaster, a re-interpretation of the classic Chevrolet 3100 series pickup from the 1950s which was the equivalent of the Silverado we know and love today. This latest version of the Thriftmaster design is the Old School Edition and, quite simply, it's one of the best restomods of any car or truck that you can get anywhere.
For a start, it's an absolutely gorgeous piece of machinery. Finished in a combination of light green and white with plenty of chromed pieces everywhere, it's a brilliantly quaint throwback to the designs and colour combinations of 1950s America. The truck's bed gains a gorgeous African teak decking too, something that's more befitting of a Rolls-Royce or a luxury yacht than for what originally would have been a farm truck!
The inside is also brilliantly done, with beautifully upholstered brown leather seats with green suede piping. The dashboard carries the light green and white theme through into the inside, as do the light green metal parts on the doors, the white steering column and the light green frame for the split front windscreen. The steering wheel just on its own is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship; it's a glistening chrome affair with a leather-wrapped rim that no doubt feels absolutely wonderful to handle as you drive the truck.
Whilst it may look charmingly old-school inside and out, under the skin things are anything but old-fashioned. The Thriftmaster Old School Edition is powered by a General Motors LS3 V8 engine (which is also fully emissions-certified!) cranking out 430 hp and mated to a modern GM 4L85-E automatic transmission. It also has a re-worked chassis with fully up to date front and rear independent suspension. With the huge increase in power compared to the original truck it needs some serious anchors to get it stopped, so Icon has fitted the truck with modern Brembo brakes.
On the inside, the truck gains a modern air conditioning system as well as a new entertainment system with Bluetooth connectivity which is discreetly hidden behind the vintage aesthetic that Icon is adamant about preserving. The entertainment system is so discreet in fact that you probably wouldn't even notice it was there unless you saw the speakers that are cheekily hidden behind the seats!
Of course, these trucks aren't cheap and they're only made in very limited numbers. But, if you have plenty of money to burn and you want something that little bit different or if you want a restomod that's of the highest quality, you can't do much better than this. It's a 50s truck that has the performance of a muscle car and all the mod cons that you could want. You can't go wrong with that, really!
