If you could have one classic Holden, what would it be?

Okay, so I've chosen 3.

I'll be honest, when I'm in the shower dreaming about being a classic car owner, it's not often Holdens I have in mind - simply because once you're thinking about driving a 1938 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900B Lungo through Canberra's quiet centre, it's hard to fit anything else in.

But I met up with a lovely chap who owns an FJ sedan and is restoring two FJ panel vans, and I realised right then that everyone wants a classic Holden. Madly.

And given the choice, this is what I'd have:

1) '70 HOLDEN TORANA GTR-X

Despite the fact Holden even printed off sales brochures for it, it was only ever a concept unfortunately.

2) '69 HOLDEN HURRICANE

Also a one-off, and the tight cockpit and lack of air-conditioning does mean it gets impressively stuffy apparently, but it's the most beautiful thing Australia ever made.

3) '48 HOLDEN 48-215 (FX)

So presuming both of those were unavailable, which they would be, my preference would flow to the FX. It's the car that started it, I love the humble but pretty shape, and though the FJ is undoubtedly the better car, I prefer the FX grille.

SO YOUR TURN. WHAT CLASSIC HOLDEN WOULD YOU HAVE IN YOUR LIFE?

(No newer than 1990)

  • Piazza, Sandman or an Efijy if that counts

  • The Renault Fuego wannabe... The Holden Piazza. I know they were meant to be woeful, but when they came out I wanted one. Also with the funky wheels.

    • Yeah, they looked good. And there's a dimension in which that's all that matters.

  • Yes...a GTR-X...which came tragically close to production...if only! Of the vehicles that actually got produced, I’d take its closest relative. The LJ GTR XU1.
