I'm bored of JDM

The entire JDM culture has been completely oversaturated an I'm sick of it.

Overview

Car culture has been flooded by JDM cars. It isn't that bad here on Drivetribe, but on other sites it is almost imposable to escape a flood of Supras, skylines and RX7s. I used to be a JDM fanboy, (although not as bad as most of them if I do say so myself) my dream car was the 3rd gen RX7 followed closely in 2nd by the Tommi Mäkinen Evo 6. But over the past few years it started to grow old for me, all the endless ls swapped, wide bodied Nissan 240 drift videos an clips of a 1000hp supra beating a 500hp Ferrari that probably doesn't care for the 1,000,000th time. I'll go through the reasons why I'm bored of it.

The term "JDM" is overused.

Say it after me. JUST BECAUSE IT'S JAPANESE, DOES NOT MEAN IT IS JDM! JDM stands for Japanese domestic market not made in Japan. So stop using on cars that are sold in other markets. I saw someone claim that a Toyota Yaris is a JDM car because it was made in Japan, but most people would consider a Yaris JDM, but then they go on to say a left hand drive Mazda RX7 that was made to go to the US and has spent it's entire life in the US a JDM car. Sure it's Japanese but it wasn't made for Japan so it isn't JDM, end of.

JDM cars being held on pedestals.

JDM fanboys treat these cars as if there sacred, for example if there is a video of some clot in his 1000hp supra flooring it in the street and going into a pole, everyone in the comments are saying things like "Noooo I'm actually crying" or "R.I.P why did this legend have to die". But if someone does the same in a Zonda, everyone is joking and saying how shit he is at driving or how there glad it didn't hit the S2000 in the background. But why? The Zonda is much rarer, more expensive, more special and exclusive. These cars are treated as if they are holier than thou by there insufferable fan base. Speaking of which...

There insufferable fanbase

Jeez, where to start on this? JDM fanboys are some of the most irritating people in the car community. Forget muscle guys or EV fans, JDM fanboys are my least favorite car fanbase. They are mostly the reason I'm writing this post. They are properly toxic. Many a comment war have been started over them not being able to accept that there dearly beloved isn't perfect in every way and that a supercar may have some advantages over there R32. They turn there nose up to any car made outside of Japan and blindly worship all cars made in it weather there good or not.

Things become cool just because there JDM

Many cars and other things are more popular than European or US versions just because they are "JDM". For instance, the Dodge stealth and Mitsubishi 3000GT. There essentially the same car but which one do you hear about more? The Mitsubishi. Sure it isn't as much as say an RX7 but in comparison to the Dodge stealth, it completely eclipses it. The Mitsubishi is seen as an underrated JDM icon while people don't really care for the stealth. Most of the duller than beige Japanese cars of the 70s 80s and 90s have all become cult classics while European and American rivals rot in scrapyards.

Other cultures exist!

Now the JDM culture is cool, but we have been ignoring some properly amazing cultures like Australia's car culture. I remember reading about a guy who went to an Aussie ute festival in the middle of the outback and it sounded like riotus fun. People in all types of utes, drinking beer and doing skids in the middle of nowhere not giving a shit about what anyone thinks. This is one of many awesome car cultures across the globe outside of Japan. I think it's time we take a peak at some more cultures across the world.

Opinions on the "legends"

Not really to do with this but I'll throw it in anyway.

Toyota Supra: Easily the worst offender, this car has been permanently ruined for me. Just far too much hype for a decent car.

Nissan Skyline GTR: Still overrated but not as bad as the supra but still a bit, doesn't mean they aren't a fantastic cars.

Mazda RX7: Used to be my dream car and still like it, overrated but not ruined for me.

Honda NSX: Only one I think is properly rated, truly innovative and an incredible car.

Subaru Impreza STI: Never really loved them but I can admire them, not that overrated.

Mitsubishi Evo: The least loved of the 6 but still a bit overrated, like them more than the WRX.

Conclusion

I like JDM culture but it has been way overexposed for me to get exited about anymore. Can we all just move on to something different. Piss of with Supra beating Lambo No: 100,000,000,000 or ls swapped rocket bunny S15 doing some drifting and try find something new. We need more variety in car culture so please stop only going on about JDM.

  • There are a lot of Japanese/JDM cars that I love, especially the ones from the nineties, but only if they're unmodified. Tuned models often look absolutely hideous and they're so ubiquitous that they're boring. Although there are a lot of great cars, they're seriously overhyped.

  • Yes, the run numbers are very large, but by this point, all the old supras and skylines are rarities. Cars get a rock bottom value and are scrapped. Otherwise, yeah these cars have had more then there share of internet attention. The story around these cars however is fascinating, along with why they became tuner legends, while supposedly capped at 276hp. The cars themselves are destroyed by today’s cars, I mean the potential an R34 gtr has with a big turbo can be matched by a cheaper Audi S6 with a remap. People misunderstand these cars, and think they hold up in today’s tuning level when they really don’t, but that doesn’t change the fact they paved the way for a lot of stuff. The Supra and RX-7 were early adopters of sequential twin turbos, the GTRs 4WD system was years ahead of its time, and it had AWS. The Imprezas and evo were not much of the pace of the likes of the 348 and 355 of the time.

    • Yeah but I've heard all the stories over and over and they are cool, but I just want more people to talk about more cars other than the same few again and again.

    • Yeah, everyone has told them at some point, some are repeated so much.
