In the late 90s the famous Zakspeed team, after retiring from the Formula 1 championship, decided to acquire one of Oreca's Dodge Viper GTS-Rs to compete in the Nürburgring Endurance Series. Driven by company founder Peter Zakowski together with other famous drivers including Klaus Ludwig and Michael Bartels, the car managed to conquer the 1999, 2001 and 2002 editions of the Nurbirgring 24 hours before the regulation changes made it obsolete for run.

Instead of being placed in a museum, the Viper was heavily modified by Zakspeed to transform it into a vehicle suitable for road use, obtaining homologation in 2011. To have authorization to circulate, the technicians therefore modified the rear spoiler and the side flaps, renounced the racing diffuser, used homologated tires and alloy wheels, installed a new braking system with handbrake lever, designed a special system cooling, modified the V10 and the exhaust system and introduced new seats.

Despite the weakening, the engine was still able to develop the power of 507 hp with 677 Nm of torque, guaranteeing acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h and a top speed of 302 km/h. The Zakspeed Viper was the only GTS-R to receive road traffic approval among the 57 built examples of the legendary US racing car.
