So, the 2016 season has concluded and what is it we have learnt? Kvyat can ride a bike. Massa has the ability to make the motor sporting world sob into their hands and Jenson Button is a hilarious drunk. Rosberg takes the title but it was not the Mercedes boys that really caused the fun for the season.
With that in mind, what can be done to bring in new fans and create exhilarating scenes for the current? Rules. Rules and regulations. On paper those words couldn't be duller than your Gran's jumpers. But these two wonderfully mundane words have the ability to throw up a storm of excitement. What did Brazil show us? Rain creates unforgettable moments. Having a wet track for the race, whether it be the whole race or just part creates drama and tension which is everything we want! Is there a way we can create more rain? Sprinklers over the track maybe? Think about it, being able to randomly make the track wet through out random races in the calendar can cause all sorts of madness! Another benefit to this, it tests the pure courage and skill of those on track. It separates the men from the boys, the Verstappens and the Wehrleins. Some food for thought.
Jeremy Clarkson created a post recently around how to fix Formula One. He suggested that if one team mate qualified in 1st then the other should start last to create more of a rivalry between team mates in qualifying. Something that I know would excite many I'm sure! The rules and regs are up for question always and they are key to the sport. Changing them, adapting them and allowing them to grow with the increasingly developing tech is something that is essential to the sport's success and there are many many options with how to do exactly that.
