In the future , the cost of constructing and maintaining a car will be an important consideration .

So in an attempt to reduce future individual transport costs , let’s design a low cost car .

What sort of engineering features reduce costs ? # 1 : a simple , sturdy , large capacity, locast iron , pushrod, overhead valve , straight six or straight 8 engine configuration.

( straight 6s and 8s are the smoothest running , and have the most number of main bearings, which gives you longevity . )

  • So there you have it , the only fiscally conservative car design of the future is a full sized straight 8 Buick .

Basically we won’t be able to afford anything else .

  • With looming global labour shortages , each car will need to be able to carry a lot of stuff, because of the shortage of drivers .

I’m thinking Buick Roadmaster wagon :

  • To save money on headlights , you’ll want simple, $20 , sealed be dual filament headlights , like on this ‘50s Buick .

  • To make it easy for gas station grease monkeys like me , you’ll want a simple, sturdy automatic transmission, and because we all have bad backs , it will want to shift smoothly and comfortably:

I’m thinking 1950s Buick Dyna Flow

  • Because many of us will have bad backs , the average car will need air ride suspension and 75 or 80 profile tyres for maximum ride quality .

    Here’s the 1958 Buick version :

There is a compressor , to provide air for the air bags , and very high profile tyres .
