Indian muscles up with powerful new American bagger

FEATURING a fixed fairing, inverted front end, intuitive ride technology, and the most powerful motor in its class, Indian Motorcycle has launched a state-of-the-art modern bagger that redefines the term 'fully loaded.

Following on from the recent launch of its new 122hp PowerPlus 108ci 60-degree V-Twin power plant, the American bike brand has revealed a new bike, powered by that very engine, the 2020 Indian Challenger.

Pushing out 178Nm of torque, the new ride is designed to lift the bar on performance baggers, and features a 6-speed transmission with true power overdrive, an assisted clutch to reduce clutch effort, and hydraulic valve lash adjusters and camshaft tensioners.

"The Indian Challenger delivers a new level of performance for riders who understand that the seemingly small details make a huge difference," Indian Motorcycle VP Reid Wilson said.

"Our mindset was to leave no stone un-turned and deliver a bagger that exceeds the standards in categories like power, handling, comfort, and technology."

New technology allows riders to customise the bike's throttle mapping by selecting of three ride modes. Rain, Standard and Sport are available for rider selection to suit conditions and rider style.

The Challenger features all the premium touring amenities riders expect from Indian Motorcycle, including electronic cruise control, full LED lighting, a long-haul seat, ABS, key-less ignition, and weatherproof saddlebags with over 68 litres of storage space.

In addition, a modern and aggressively styled chassis-mounted fairing sits over the Challenger’s inverted front suspension. This, combined with the bike’s lightweight cast aluminum frame and hydraulically adjustable FOX rear shock, delivers unrivaled handling and rock-solid stability.

Race-spec radially-mounted Brembo brakes provide superior stopping power, and new performance touring Metzeler Cruistec tires offer supreme traction.

The fairing also scores an adjustable windscreen with nearly three inches of travel, and adjustable air vents – delivering unprecedented rider protection from the elements.

With menacing LED running lights, a central headlamp, and a redesigned and a modernised Indian Motorcycle headdress adorning its front fender, the Challenger presents an unmistakable profile day and night.

The 2020 Indian Challenger Dark Horse is available in Thunder Black Smoke, Sandstone Smoke, and White Smoke. The Indian Challenger Limited is available in Thunder Black Pearl, Deepwater Metallic, and Ruby Metallic.

Pricing for the Challenger will start at $39,995 (AUD) ride away, while Dark Horse pricing will start at $39,595 (AUD) ride away, with both variants arriving at local dealers in early 2020. See your local Indian Motorcycle dealer for more information.

  • I don't believe they are the sexiest bikes on earth, but then again I don't really look at bikes as sexy.

    Cool looking or a standout design would be more appropriate.

    It does floor me that Indian doesn't get the same scrutiny that Harley does. I like both brands, but both are way overpriced for me to consider buying a new one. I will stick with my 20-year old Harley with what I think is their best engine, the Evolution. Is it the most powerful no, but last I checked the speed limit was still capped and an overpowered bike could lead to more issues.
