India's two-wheeler commission head Sujith Kumar elected VP of FIM Asia

India will be represented for the next four years in the FIM Asia council.

After the addition of Gautam Singhania as India's representative in the FIA's World Motor Sport Council, the Federation of Motor Sport Clubs of India's two-wheeler commission head Sujith Kumar has been chosen as Vice-President of FIM Asia council.

Kumar is one of the four VP elected over the weekend, joining fellow new comers China’s Gong Hong Guo and Guam's Stanley Yasuhiro, while Bahrain’s Isa Al Whadi is the only person to be re-elected for the position.

"My focus is purely on the development of two-wheeler motorsports and the good of the riders," said the seven-time Indian National Rally champion Kumar after his election as the VP in the FIM Asia General Assembly in Bangkok.

"I believe that now is the right time to ensure that India is represented on motorcycle racing’s regional governing body so that it can influence the development of the sport throughout Asia in the best possible way."

Kumar has been instrumental in bringing the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship (ARRC) and the FIM Asia Cup of Road Racing (ACRR) to India in the last few years. "This is a significant development for Indian motorsport," said FMSCI President Akbar Ebrahim.

"We will continue to work towards promoting every discipline of motorsport in the country," he added. Meanwhile, the Presidential role went to Stephan ‘Macky’ Carapiet from Philippines. He won by a majority of 18 votes to nine against current head Wan Ahmad Zaharuddin.

"Now we can get on with our work," said Carapiet. "There is a lot to do to improve communications with member federations and the way we work with FIM Headquarters in Switzerland.

"We will increase numbers of FIM Asia sanctioned events, including three-nations competitions and see more rounds in the core Road Racing, Super Moto and Motocross championships," he added, as together with the four VP, they kick-start their four year reign.
