Electric power offers endless opportunities when it comes to modified classics because you can take what used to be an old slow car, and make it fast by whacking a great big electric motor in it.

This is exactly what Ford has done and you can do it too using the brand's Eluminator E-Crate Motor.

In order to showcase this new technology, Ford has brought this concept car to SEMA based on a 1978 F-100 pickup. However, it's now powered by two electric motors from a 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition – giving it a total of 480 horsepower and 634 lb-ft of torque.

The F-100 concept is dripping in Ford's latest EV tech including a completely revamped interior and exterior to match its futuristic stance – including the addition of two screens, making it feel like a Mustang Mach-E too.

As for the e-crate motor that Ford is demonstrating here, it's part No. M-9000-MACH-E and costs $3,900 and can be purchased at any authorised Ford parts warehouse dealers or the Ford Performance Parts website.

With this motor, owners can then stick it in whatever car they want to convert it into electric power. Each motor produces a total of 281 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque and its aim is to fit any car whether it's classic or modern.

Before you ask, it is street-legal in all 50 states and Ford Performance says it's planning to develop a greater list of components for the Eluminator powertrain, such as battery systems, controllers, and traction inverters.

Is this an EV conversion kit you'd consider?

  • This is a thing that has a place in the world, yet you ruin everything with that first sentence. Like EV-swapping classics is the best thing that could happen to them.

  • Hell no, this is even worse than the norm given the touchscreen's significant role.
