Is Ford going to build a Shelby Mustang Mach-E?

It’s inevitable, isn’t it?

Technically, this is just a concept car designed for this year’s SEMA but you know the drill, if they’ve built the prototype, it probably means they’ve already considered a production vehicle.

Ford calls it the ‘Mustang Mach-E GT Concept, and it is based on the AWD version of Ford’s first EV, with the Performance Edition Extended Range Battery.

The body panels are made from graphene-infused carbon fiber and the car is fitted with a long list of custom components, from the MagneRide damping system to the custom made Monoblock wheels with Michelin Pilot Sport 4S lightweight tyres.

They haven’t said anything about engine upgrades, but the Mach-E Extended Range on which is based delivers 480 bhp and 860 Nm (635 lb-ft) of torque from an electric powertrain that sends the power to all four wheels. The range is 260 miles.

The trend is clear. AMG, Shelby, M, RS. All of these sub-divisions/subsidiaries specialise in high-performance variants of cars that already exist but the problem is that the cars they usually work with are ditching ICE in favour of electric propulsion. What do you think? Should Ford use the Shelby name for an electric car, or should they just relegate it to the history books if/when all petrol-powered vehicles are gone?

  • I still don’t like it being a mustang. Just call it the Ford Mach E and everyone will be happy but damn that does look good. I honestly don’t get the hate for the thought of a Shelby as Shelby made great cars brilliant (for American cars) and it wasn’t all about the big engines etc it was handling too so if they can make it corner like a hot hatch then two thumbs up from me
