Is Sony really going to build a car?

The Sony Vision S hits the road

A few months ago, Sony unveiled a new electric car concept called the Vision S and I'm gonna keep it 100, as my friend Daniel from Inglewood would put it, I thought it was just a marketing stunt. But I was wrong because the new Vision S has actually just begun public road tests in Europe.

Sony built the prototype in Graz, at the Magna Steyr factory where the G-Wagen is constructed, and then they brought the concept back to Tokyo for further development.

We're probably going to see more cars like this one in the future because the impact of technology in cars is becoming increasingly important as most cars are basically computer on wheels these days, with a trillion ADAS and infotainment systems and electric powertrains.

Would you drive a car made by Sony?

  • I think it's quite good looking but it will be interesting to see how it turns out (if it does)

  • It’s not unheard of for manufacturers to switch products, just look at Peugeot and Daewoo.

If the end product is credible then it will be fine as EV’s are effectively just electronics and wires and motors. If it helps develop the EV breed and battery tech then it’s okay.

Sony’s only problem is getting the luxury bit correct as the Sony brand and the products they are used to making don’t exactly scream tactile luxury.

    • I have to say that the statement that they are "just electronics and wires and motors" is missing something. That statement lacks the fact that those things move a 3000 pound object with people in it and around it. Lives are now at stake.
