Remember Test Drive Unlimited, that game that mixed car culture and personal lifestyle? The game that always showed graphics ahead of its time? The one that let us explore absolutely huge and beautiful maps, Ibiza and Hawaii? Well, chances are those memories can once again become a reality!

Remembering TDU...

Back in 2006 gamers were given the opportunity to explore Hawaii and take part part in many racing events to progress and earn some cash, cash which would later be spent in dealerships on personalised cars and on personal homes all over the massive world in TDU. Later on in 2011 Eden Airlines, the airline of the game, took us down to Ibiza so we could take part in a new racing adventure, an adventure that involved a racing cup known as the Solar Crown which later took us back to Hawaii, how's that for nostalgia? TDU created an experience like no other and really stood out from other racing titles at the time but unfortunately became practically non-existent after Atari had run into some financial trouble.

What made the TDU series special...

I mean yeah the game looked good and it was a fun racer with lots of events and miles to explore but TDU was more than that... TDU allowed people to live a full virtual life that wasn't only behind the wheel. The racing was great and all but what really made it amazing was the life outside of the car. TDU not only allowed players to purchase and have their own houses around the map but also explore and customize them in first person. The houses even came with garages to walk around and store vehicles in, vehicles which could be entered and started and compared in the garages. I mean you could even visit and walk around car dealers to choose your next baby! The character wasn't any random figure with legs either, TDU gave players the ability to have full control over the looks of their players through hairdressers and even places that offered surgery to alter the player's looks. If that's not enough, players could visit and walk around clothes shops to find new outfits too, pretty cool right? Still not convinced TDU is amazing? Well what is one requested feature by driving gamers all over? The ability to use turn signals h TDU2 allowed players to do, it also allowed for convertibles to take down the roof and even open and close the windows of cars. You're sold now, aren't you? Take all of that and mix it with the huge maps and stunning graphics and scenery and there you have it, one of the best racers ever known to mankind.

So, is it coming back?

Well, we don't know yet, but chances are good. Why do I think this you ask? Well, BigBen Interactive, the company that brought FlatOut back to life, well around 2 years ago they obtained the rights to the TDU series, so what's going to stop them from bringing another game back to life? A few months ago BigBen also acquired Kylotonn Racing which has been respsonible for some other racing titles as well, could this mean Kylotonn and BigBen are currently developing TDU3? We can only hope, and pre-warning to the new developers: you guys have a lot to live up to, so don't disappoint!

  • I would absolutely love a new TDU!

The original TDU completely changed my life, turning me from someone who liked cars into someone who truly loves cars. The exotic location and cars, the races, the extra missons, everything about that game was (and still is) awesome and, as far as i'm concerned, the competition is only starting to get close.

While TDU1 had a huge impact on my life, i must admit though that i didn't really like TDU2 when it first came out; it did improve in many aspects, but it also had defects that, at the time, i hated, such as the buggy physics and the lack of Lamborghinis, but nevertheless i still enjoyed it, and as time passes by i'm starting to like it more and the want to grab a used copy keeps getting stronger.

When it comes to racing games currently on sale, i think The Crew 2 is the one that comes the closest to be a new TDU (which makes sense, since most of Ivory Tower's employees used to work at Eden Games), although i must admit it also has some serious defects (Disclaimer: i didn't play any of The Crew games).

As for a new TDU, if the guys at Kylotonn Studios are developing it, they sure have a lot to live up to! They have lots of experience with racing games, since they developed titles such as the WRC series, V-Rally 4 and even TT Isle of Man (which is about bikes, but TDU has bikes as well, so that's good), so i think the series is on good hands. But they mustn't forget what made TDU great, and make sure to do a good job. They should include at least 3 islands (Ibiza, O'ahu and, i dunno, Sicily?), a 200+ car list (classics, hot hatches, exotics, saloons, etc...), all kinds of houses (from cheap caravans to multi-million-dollar mansions), the ability for the players to walk around dealerships, houses, garages and so on, the ability to fully customize your avatar, the online clubs, races of various kinds (circuit, time trial, drag, knockout, etc...), and also car tuning (not as in depht as the Forza series, so don't expect obnoxious bodykits, but do expect upgrades such as engine, turbo, gearbox, etc..., as well as vinyls).

If the next TDU has all of what i listed above, than it will be, in my opinion, the best online open-world racing game of all time. Let's just hope they'll really make it!

    • I was so upset when I saw Lamborghini was removed with TDU2! Especially considering it was the cover car with the Ford GT in TDU1. Funny thing I saw actually is when I went to one of the ttuners or paint shops or some enterable building (can't...

  • TDU is the only racing game Ive never truly played but have always wanted to!

However, with being used to more recent games, I think the timing for me to try them now would be a mistake. My opinion would be totally different to yours...

So as someone who has never played the TDU series before.

I would love a new TDU game to come out. And would definitely buy it this time round upon release!

    • Too be honest even trying out TDU2 now will be impressive, I mean it doesn't meet the graphical quality of say Forza Horizon 4 but it's really worth the try, trust me! It was way ahead of it's time!

If it does come out you really need to give it a...
