Is The CX-30 A Good CSUV?
I had the keys to this CX-30 for over a week. Here are my thoughts.
Mazda has given us an all-new compact crossover SUV called the CX-30. This all-new model creates a bridge between the CX-3 and CX-5 models for the consumer to get a taste of what it would be like to own both models at once in a way. Made for anyone and everyone who wants to buy a CSUV, the CX-30 is a new model to select. The only question is this: is it even a good CSUV? Well, let's find out below.
Exterior Styling
"...a saltine cracker..."
The CX-30's exterior styling really looks like it is just a lifted and widened Mazda3. That is usually the problem with most manufacturers in this day and age. The vehicles in their lineup all look the same, and as that may be to stay uniformed with what the manufacturer represents, it also shows the lack of creativity. Mazda is one of those manufacturers that are at fault for lack of creativeness. The CX-30 is as bland as a saltine cracker with nothing to go with it.
Interior Design
"...nor is it..."
If I were to say that the interior of the CX-30 is exciting to look at, I would be lying. Like the exterior, the interior is boring and dull. Sure, the trim and all looks nice but there is nothing awe inspiring about it. The space inside the cabin is decent. I can sit behind myself, but it isn't comfortable nor is it unbearable. Trunk space can hold a few suitcases for a trip. The seats are comfortable to say the least. But while driving, I sat at the same height as regular sedans such as the Nissan Maxima or Chevrolet Impala. That is really all I have to say about the CX-30 interior. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Pricing and Options
So, how much does this CX-30 cost? After everything, the total price comes to $31,370. What does this include? Well, for safety, the CX-30 comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, tire pressure monitoring, adaptive radar cruise control with stop and go, smart brake support, stability control, traction control, driver attention alert, ABS with brake assist, advance airbag system, lane departure warning system, and lane keep assist. For comfort and convenience, the CX-30 comes with Bluetooth connectivity with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay capabilities, Bose sound system, heated front seats, and multiple USB ports.
Performance
"...horse and buggy..."
The 2.5L four-cylinder engine under the hood of the CX-30 only produced 186 horsepower with matching torque. Acceleration is lacking with what feels like it takes forever to get up to highway speeds. Overtaking can only be an option if there is a horse and buggy in front. With my driving habits, I was able to achieve roughly 24 miles to the gallon. Ride comfort is comfortable. Which is what I expect out of something with a Mazda badge. Steering is sharp and direct. Braking is quite forceful. The suspension keeps it all tidy and doesn't let any drama happen while driving on uncomfortable roads.

Conclusion
"...didn't leave an...."
So, is the Mazda CX-30 a good CSUV? To sum it up, yes. But that comes with some hesitance. It does the job as a vehicle and that is just about it. It is just ever so slightly higher than a Mazda3 and has way less of the characteristics of the Mazda3. The only impression I got out of the CX-30 was that it didn't leave an impression on me. I was actually quite over it after having it for only a couple of days. The worst thing about it is that the air conditioning was horrible. It never got cold enough like other models would and it never held whatever cold it produced before the heat made its way back in. I would never get one. I would prefer the Mazda3. Especially for that price. It is unjustifiable.

The only bit i disagree with it the styling. Everything else makes sense, but I think the styling is phenomenal.
Otherwise, the CX-30 is just another way for Mazda to suck more money out of peoples pockets
Indeed. But I wish styling didnt look so copy and paste.
I don’t particularly mind it.
Do you like the MX-30’s styling? That’s pretty different from all their other products.
Got one for the wifey, and she loves it. Used to own a cross trek. The CX-30 just has a lot more going on for it when we did a back-to-back test drive/comparison.
That's good to hear!
Sounds a bit like what Mercedes have done with the A/GLA- add a few millimeters in ride height, add another few millimeters here and there, and raise the price more than this warrants. Hardly any extra practicality over the model it is based on.
Exactly. And I wasn't a fan of the GLA either and A Class. I wouldn't buy one but still, MB find a way to be the standard.
Comfy ride but easily forgettable
Indeed.
Not value added
Exactly.
