Is The GX 460 A Luxury SUV For The Family?

I had the keys to this GX 460 for a week. Here are my thoughts.

The Lexus GX 460 has been around since 2003 and well into its 2nd generation on the Toyota 4Runner chassis and body. What is good now is that the GX has settled quite into the new facelift for the 2020 model year. The GX 460 is built to be a luxury SUV for the family of a larger bundle. But the question has to be asked: is it a luxury SUV for the family? What makes it good enough? Let's find out.

Exterior Styling

"...a clunky behemoth..."

The GX 460 is quite a massive SUV in all aspects. As far as styling goes, the GX 460 is not much of a looker. sure, it is laid back and seems to be relaxed but the styling stops right near the backend. Also, the wheels look like they're too small to even hold the GX 460 upright. Maybe they can since they seem to be placed to keep a proper balance where it fits. All in all, it is a bit of a clunky behemoth with smooth lines in most places.

Interior Design

"...to give off..."

As far as interiors go, the GX 460 has a nice mixture of metal, leather, wood, and plastic to give off a luxurious look and feel. The seats are comfortable and offer great support. The one thing that stood out in the GX 460 in the interior is that the cabin space is yes. It is as massive as it is on the outside. Clearly, I can sit behind myself comfortably with no issues.

Pricing and Options

So, how much does this Lexus GX 460 cost? After adding everything up, the total cost comes to $59,310. What does that get a potential owner? Well, for safety the GX 460 comes with the Lexus safety system and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, high-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, 10 airbags, brake assist with smart stop technology, backup camera, blind-spot monitoring, intuitive park assist, and trailer sway control. For comfort and convenience, the GX 460 comes with a multimedia infotainment system with a smart-watch and Alexa integration, voice command, sat-nav, power tilt and telescoping heated steering wheel, Mark and Levinson 17-speaker surround premium sound system, 3-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated powered front seats, and heated 2nd-row seats.

Performance

"...understandably now makes..."

The 4.6L V8 under the hood produces a measly 301 horsepower that is sent to all four wheels. Which understandably now makes it easier to get why I was only able to achieve a sad 13 miles to the gallon with my driving habits as well as having such horrible acceleration. Luckily, the GX 460 has great ride comfort. The suspension is quite soft but firm when needed except for cornering where the weight can be felt. The steering is light and direct. As far as braking is concerned, one can tell the weight of the GX 460 when pressing the brake pedal.

Conclusion

"...i absolutely would..."

So, is the GX 460 a luxury SUV for the family? In short, yes it is, but I absolutely would not make it my first choice. For many reasons due to it being just bulky and not being as fuel-efficient as I would want it to be. I also have to say that the GX 460 isn't the best looking SUV on the market by far. I cannot justify going and spending the money on something I would hate to look at.

  • You’re missing the point, these drivetrains are bulletproof. The shitty fuel economy is just the reliability tax

    • Haha. I guess so. If it isn't broken why fix it?

    • Right, this car isn’t just an accessory like a leased Mercedes, it shouldn’t be held to the same standards

  • Let's assume you have a family consisting of two adults and three kids, and roughly $60k available to buy this Lexus. For that budget, what would your first choice be, provided you weren't allowed to buy a second-hand vehicle?
