Is the VW Golf R the 2nd hand bargain of the decade?
After seven years of production, the Mk7 Golf has finally reached the end of the road. The new Mk8 will be revealed later this year, and by early next year we'll have brand new versions of the GTI and R.
What's your point?
My point is this: because the Mk7 is getting a bit long in the tooth, you can now buy an early Golf R for as little as £13,000 - and that price is likely to drop even further when the new R arrives. 13K is still a substantial chunk of money - you can buy a lot of nice, fast cars with that budget. But the Golf R might well be the best of the bunch.
There's just one thing. We all know that the R is a great all-rounder. It is undeniably fast, capable and practical. But is it just a little bit... boring? With its inconspicuous styling, endless grip and muted exhaust note, is this a car that impresses - but fails to thrill? Check out the video below to find out.
