Is This Classic Bronco Enhanced Or Ruined By Its New Electric Transformation?
Over the years, the Ford bronco has become a symbol of America. Especially of its rugged, cut-off wilderness. At the centre of the ‘Murica-ness was its engine, a modest 2.8 litre inline-6. However, a Californian company named Zero Labs Automotive has decided to restore classic Broncos by leaving out the engine.
Instead, their version of the car is powered by a 70 kWh lithium-ion battery feeding energy to an electric motor capable of producing 360-horsepower, that’s a lot more than the Bronco’s original 105. Thanks to Level 2 charging compatibility, the all-electric Bronco will fill its 190 mile range in a few hours.
Unlike most EVs, Zero Labs Bronco features a 5-speed gearbox between the motor and the wheels. This is unusual as the instant torque of electric motors negate the use for a gearbox. However, with off-roading in mind, the extra control could be useful.
Speaking of off-roading, the Bronco will be unstoppable thanks to a part-time four-wheel-drive system, Currie front and rear diffs, adjustable Fox coil overs and six-piston Brembo brakes.
The classic Bronco body panels are replaced by light but strong, aerospace-grade carbon-fibre panels. The front grille, or lack of one, makes the car look very futuristic and spaceship-like.
On the interior, Zero Lab customers will have the choice of leather or premium upholstery and bamboo or walnut interior panels. The gauge cluster has been redesigned to show all necessary information while keeping the retro look of the exterior.
Finally, in an effort to make this Bronco EV as timeless as possible, Zero Labs has made the drivetrain modifications upgradeable. In fact, when EV technology moves on, the batteries and control systems can easily be brought up to date.
If you’re interested in one of these, you’ll have to be two things, very fast and very rich. In fact, the 150 examples to be made are already on pre-order and will all be sold between $250,000 and $350,000. If however it doesn’t take your fancy, why not tell me what’s wrong with it in the comments.
