We all speed from time to time. It doesn’t matter for what reason: might be late for work or maybe just out having a little fun. When we speed, we run the risk of getting a large fine and a lecture from someone not keen on questioning the status quo. Speeding tickets are a part of driving and the judicial system sure wants us to feel like we’re worse than Hitler because we were speeding. They make it seem like speeding is the only reason there are accidents, but nothing could be further from the truth.
In 2016, there were 133,124 collisions in my home province, Alberta. 14,932 of those collisions were a result of speeding, or 11.2%. 299 fatalities were reported that year, of which only 65 were a direct result of travelling at an unsafe speed. It is sad that people lose their lives, but speeding isn’t the horrible scourge they’d like us to believe especially when there were 113,967 casualties caused by inexperienced drivers making poor decisions on the road, and of those, only 7.7% were a result of speeding.
Its easy math. 113,967 is greater than 14,932 yet it is the minority who take all the heat for accidents. The fact of the matter is that inexperience is the problem and speeding isn’t so much.
I’m out to prove that the quest to fine every driver who clips along over the limit is nothing more than a scam; a cash cow whose glorious yield neatly lines the pockets of lawmakers and enforcers. They have “Your Speed” signs everywhere now which should tell us how fast we are going. These signs definitely report a speed back to the driver, but the information is consistently 5 – 15 km/h less than what you are actually going. I’ve collected a lot of video footage showing this discrepancy and can be viewed right here on Supervillains. I’ve been trying to get speeding tickets as well to compare the speed sign readings to the readings from actual radar and laser speed guns used by the police. Wouldn’t you know it; the cops read the exact speed that is displayed on the speedometer.
My first ticket in the M4
This leads me to believe that the crackdown on speeding is nothing but a scam. When the speed signs report a low speed, it encourages drivers to pick up the pace. At least, I feel encouraged to pick it up, and so I do. Then we get ticketed for speeding because the adjusted speed got its adjustment as the result of a deliberately erroneous report. It really is a great scam, from the perspective of the scammers.. er, I mean noble and just law enforcement officials.
I got a ticket doing 130 in a 110 but because of your speed signs, I was certain I was only doing 120. My speedometer said 130 exactly and Old Bill clocked me at exactly 130.
I will go to court and present my findings to the Judge. I have more than enough proof of this discrepancy. I guess we will see what happens. No matter what, I encourage everyone to not believe the hype. Yes, every now and then an accident happens because of speed, but it us less frequent than accidents caused by inexperience.
We need better driver training, not more cops handing out speeding tickets.
