I've bought a new Ducati without even riding it…

Turns out it's fine

As a motoring journalist you're usually pretty good at giving out buying advice over Christmas lunch, at every birthday or whenever someone in the pub finds out what you do for a living.

So you'd think I'd be pretty good at making properly informed purchase decisions… yeah, nah.

Yesterday I picked up my new bike – a brand-new Ducati Hypermotard 950SP. I'd got fed up of how serious (and seriously fast) my Ducati 1198 was, and I wanted something more casual, entertaining and slower to give me my biking mojo back. Join me as I pick the bike up with one mile on the clock and take it home via some crap small wheelies and jumping over a bridge before remembering I hadn't actually paid for it yet. Check it out, and let me know if you want to see more bike content!

  • Good for you. I found my Tuono on line ... did a deal over the phone ... flew to Charlotte ... ubered to Mooresville ... spent two hours in the owners garage going over the bike ... and then swung a leg over, hitting the road in a 50 degree rain shower for the 830 mile ride back to Florida. It rained for the entire trip. My plan was a non stop grind back home but I got to Savannah and only wanted to get off that bike. Booked a room downtown, found the appropriate pub and commenced to drink the cold and the wet out of my aching bones ... lol.

    • Haha, that sounds sort of incredible now, but I bet it wasn't at the time! Are you still enjoying it?

    • Hi Tim ... sadly, I’m prone to those types of impulsive “misadventures” ... which my wife would call something else all together.

In any case ... the love affair with my Tuono is still going strong and it looks like your about to start one...

  • I test rode a Hypermotard a while back. It was a hooning beast. Loved it. Wanted it. Couldn't justify it. Wind blast may deter you from hitting triple digits on the speedo, but I can't imagine a Hyper is likely to slow you down anywhere else...

    • Yep, I went for another ride this morning and managed to de-chicken strip it. I'm just going faster on shittier roads now 😆

    • “Faster on shittier roads” ... sums up perfectly your rider development ... I know exactly what you mean.

    • That’d be the point I fell off the back. Is that with wheelie control fully off?

    • Yeah everything was off there. It didn’t feel that high at the time as the bike is so damn tall to begin with. Definitely in the top 3 most fun bikes I’ve ridden

  • Reminds me of buying the Porsche blind. Yes, a blind buy us a bit scary - but it’s also a bit exciting! 😁
