Jaguar prepares a coupe SUV and a small SUV with BMW
The technical alliance signed between Jaguar and BMW a few months ago allowed the sharing of four, six and eight cylinder engines as well as electric motors. But it goes further because collaboration on front-wheel drive platforms will also take place.
BMW uses this platform for models below the 3 Series. The small 1 Series is based on this chassis, for example. Sharing this platform will be very positive for both brands. BMW is increasing the profitability of this architecture while Jaguar benefits from a modern platform whose development would have been very expensive.
Jaguar can therefore broaden its future prospects. Autocar magazine gives us some details about the future of the feline brand. A coupe SUV will be on board and will compete with the BMW X6, Mercedes GLE Coupe and Audi Q8. On the other hand, there will also be a small SUV that will enter the compact segment.
This small SUV will face competitors such as the BMW X2, the Mercedes GLA and the Audi Q3. The Golf also seems to be targeted because it will be even more premium for its eighth generation. The small SUV could also be used to replace Land Rover models that will have no descendants.
These ideas have already been communicated to BMW. The Bavarian brand's brains must therefore be running at full capacity and there is a good chance that the project will be validated. The latter will then begin in the same vein for models that would be sold around 2020 - 2021 in thermal, plug-in hybrid and electric engines of course!
