Jay Leno claims he did a 9.2-second 1/4 mile time in a Tesla Model S Plaid

That's a crazy number for a two-tonne sedan!

Tesla's Model S Plaid has been greatly anticipated and is due to arrive later this month. Huge claims were being made about it, but we didn't know these were true, until now...sort of.

Speaking on the Spike’s Car Radio podcast (go to 13:50), Jay Leno talked about an experience he recently had in Model S Plaid and said that he had taken the Model S Plaid to the drag strip at Auto Club Famosa, near Bakersfield, California.

“I made one pass, I drove up, had the NHRA guys there to make it official, I turned a 9.247 at 152[.09] mph,” he said. “I’ll send you the timing slip. Completely stock. It was unbelievable. I mean, and you’re talking a four-door car with the air conditioner on.”

If this is true, then Tesla has made an absolute rocket ship of a sedan which they claim makes 1,020 hp and has a 390 miles range on one charge. There will also be a Model S Plaid+ variant which will reportedly make 1,100 hp, hit 60 mph in less than two seconds, top out at 200 mph (321 km/h), and run the quarter-mile in less than 9 seconds.

  • And it sounds like a hair dryer while doing so. I’ll take the soul of an ICE car over the acceleration of an EV any day.

  • Kinda puts those fabulously expensive supercars under a bit of a question mark. Speed can no longer sell motorcars. All that's left to add is value and high quality. Perhaps the days of truly hand crafted vehicles might return, not just hand assembled ones? Whatever it is, something has to give. When any basic four door family car can keep up with a Formula 1 racing car, you know that Ferrari, Lamborghini, Pagani, et al are going to have to rethink their business strategy. OK, you don't get the handling and the cornering, but Musk is coming out with that sportscar soon as well, a real nail in any hypercar's coffin at the price it's being offered at. EVs are heavier than their ICE equivalents, at least for the time being, but ICE vehicles are going to be elbowed out of existence by emissions regs sooner rather than later and have to be electric just to survive. It's going to be fascinating to watch newcomers like Rimac and Tesla, plus others, possibly take over where traditional supercar manufacturers left off. Exciting times!

    • Soon every supercar will have the same stats. 0-60 1.9 secs. Then it just becomes pointless cuz your everyday sedan that is way cheaper does the same time. So to conclude your statement. Supercars are going to die at this rate. I mean I could...

    • They can't really keep up, that's acceleration, not top speed.
