Jean-Eric Vergne brings up Singapore GP incident after clash with Nelson Piquet
The Frenchman didn't hold back in his CRITICISM against the fellow rival after the Monaco ePrix.
Jean-Eric Vergne brought up the infamous 2008 Singapore Grand Prix incident while talking about his accident with Nelson Piquet Jr. at the Formula E's Monaco ePrix weekend.
The two had come together at Turn 4 on Lap 21 of the race when Techeetah’s Vergne attempted a move on NEXTEV’s Piquet for a place on the podium.
The Frenchman seemingly quicker had the job done turning into the U-shaped corner, but the Brazilian while defending his position slid after turning.
The two then collided, with Vergne on the outside nowhere to go, hitting the barriers, ending his run while Piquet continued to finish fourth.
After the race, when Piquet was asked on his point of view, the Brazilian said he was sorry, but added that it was just a racing incident.
“There’s nothing much [to say]. I mean overall, it was a race incident, Jean-Eric [Vergne] as we all know is a very aggressive guy, he likes to take any chances he can,” he said.
“It’s a shame that this incident happen with a guy like him because I like him, he is a good guy but he took a risk driving on the outside.
“He really kept me tight on the inside, I went back on power as soon as I could trying to keep my position, we wiggled and then we ended up touching and he ended up in the wall, but it’s something that I wouldn’t want it to happen with him but unfortunately it happened and yeah it’s a race incident.”
Vergne, naturally, had a different view and said that the replays showed who was at fault and that the FIA is already looking into the incident.
“I don’t think I need to speak much about it, the video speaks for itself. I passed him, [but] he used me to turn.
“He totally run into me in the middle of the corner and then didn’t leave me any room on the outside and he had plenty of room on the right, and he just completely pushed me onto the wall.
“So, very very very unfair driving from him and now I don’t score any points and I have a wrist that is really painful,” he said with his right hand badged up.
Since the Techeetah had more energy and a much faster car than the NEXTEV, Piquet felt Vergne should have shown some patient as he would have eventually passed him later in the race.
“For sure he had the pace to do it [overtake me], I was just trying to hold my position, at one point I would have to give up and he would pass me by,” he said.
“I think it was a mixture of him not being patient enough and by that point he was about three percent more energy than me, so for sure another 10 laps he would have another five percent more than me that would give him a big, more leverage to him to try to do anything he wanted
“And he also going to pit a lap later than me, so he could have done it in the pit stop but it’s on Eric, I mean he really likes to push the limit and unfortunately it happened, he is a good guy, I am sorry for him but anyways it happens.”
But perhaps the biggest bombshell Vergne dropped was when he openly discussed Piquet's past, especially the controversial F1 crash during his time with Renault.
"[This was] probably like same as Singapore when he crashed in Formula 1, it’s who he is, I could clearly see which kind of driver he was today [Saturday].
"I know exactly that I passed him, he used me to brake his car and then direct me into the wall, so I looked at the videos and the onboard, it is very clear.
"I don’t want to speak to him [for now], so if he has something to say other than apologies, I would not accept anything," he added.
This may not end up well between the two it seems like. Below is the video of the incident in Monaco, have your say:
