Jenson Button is a man who can safely say that he’s owned many wonderful cars. Up until now, his most notable of exotica includes a Ford GT, a Ferrari Enzo, a Bugatti Veyron, and a McLaren P1. Soon however, the P1 will no longer be in his possession - as he’s listed it for sale.

Despite the car being his pride and joy, Jenson claims that his life in America makes it impossible for him to enjoy his P1 properly. What’s exciting about his particular P1 - beyond the fact that it’s owned by a former Formula 1 world champion - is that it’s been fettled with by McLaren Special Operations and fitted with something called “Track Mode 2”. Essentially, this is a version of the P1’s reputable track mode setting that can be used legally on the road. It cost £20,000 to fit, and you won’t find it on any other P1 in the world - making this one truly unique.

With only 551 miles on the clock, this is a P1 that’s virtually fresh out of the box for somebody else to enjoy. Last month, Jenson took it for a flat out thrash around Silverstone, which I can only presume must’ve been sensational - and a worthy goodbye drive for the car. Whoever buys it will require obscenely deep pockets due to the fact that the P1 is currently listed at £1.6million.

  • McLaren obviously figured he could handle Track Mode 2. But can the new owner?
