Jenson Button, F1 World Champion and Super GT Champion, has unveiled today that he will enter his own team, JBXE, into the new Extreme E racing series.

Extreme E races in 5 location around the world that are affected by climate change. Button believes that it is important to "bring awareness" to the climate affected regions of the world to "make change." The former F1 driver is looking forward to a "tight and action packed" championship and "cant wait to get started."

Button will be following in the footsteps of former teammate Lewis Hamilton, who has recruited 9x WRC Champion, Sebastien Loeb to drive for his team. Whilst fellow F1 Champion, Nico Rosberg, will also enter his own team into the series. However, Button will be the only F1 driver to race in the series for 2021. Carlos Sainz (Sr) will also enter a team and drive himself like Button. Sainz (Sr) will be a tough competitor to beat after winning multiple WRC championships and Dakar Rally's.

For Extreme E, the teams are to enter two drivers, one man and one women. It is yet to be confirmed who Jenson Button's teammate will be, although Button has stated he is "very excited" to announce his teammate.

Button will take part in the championship alongside his role at Williams Racing as a senior advisor for the team.

  • Remark: Jenson really has taken ownership of the original Brawn GP colours and style, eh? Makes sense, and I love it.

Note: I actually don't think he owns it in the legal sense, just that he's adapted it to his own brand.

  • I’m assuming he’ll be putting in minimal cash but bring sponsorship cash as his financial contribution? If you can make the car into a winning one then the value of his shares go up and as such massive upside and if it’s a losing car then he can walk away with minimal cost.

This is a win-win and why others will do it (some big names) saving the planet is a secondary motive.

  • Extreme E is the stupidest racing series ever. Let's help these very fragile and already damaged ecosystems by bringing a bunch of race cars and spectators there, that'll help. You're lying to yourself if you think that makes any sense.
